I would like opinions (especially moderators) on whether or not we should allow Guests to post. Currently you MUST register to post. This could be potentially annoying for moderators if we allow Guest Access.

Do you think we should create a forum for Guest questions about signing up?

Is there a way you can restrict a certain forum to Guests only? You know that enabling the guest posting ability leads to spam spam spam. Might have one or maybe two forums for people who have legit questions but would prefer not to register.

The access to every forum is restrictable. I can restrict posting, replying, announcing, stickies, etc. So yes, I could setup just one or two forums for Guests to post, but only those forums.

I think that may be the easiest way to control the garbage posts. Or at least contain them.

my two cents:

- only one forum for posting anonymous, because two will bring to more spam. also if it's a dupe request or question mod it! (i mean, one which already has been answered in forum, moderate it!!)

- allow viewing of all public foruns to guests, but not to post.

i think there should be a limit to guest access because of the possible annoyance...our ISP runs forums and you have to register...but the moderators do have complete control

from personal experience on other boards, guest access isn't a good idea, generally because of the amount of spam that can / will be made. keep it registered users only Smile

Hmmmm spammers will still register. Just look at our german friends that were selling warez...

Although i do feel that guest access will only invite trouble, cause flame wars and spam in general.

Keep it registered users only, although you wont keep all spammers out, it will keep some out.

I'm thinking about making a Guest forum for Guest users to post, but if it gets at all out of hand I'll dump it.

I concur. If there's some spamming/newb-ish flaming in there, oh well, it's a forum. The amount of spam was tolerable in the old forums and there weren't any registered users. Smile

good idea.. even tho I think the guest account isn't a great idea. If you keep it controlled it will be ok.

Will it work if you'll create a new profile or i should say a new folder where guests can only access that folder to check posts where they could place posts and some inquiries... that could eliminate SPAM or can filter out SPAMMERS... just a thought..
